SUSU BAMBOO
|
 |
| For people who are not familiar with the terminology, susutake refers to bamboo that are used in old Japanese thatched roof houses serving as rafters. The direct translation meaning "soot bamboo" they are recovered from such ancient dwellings that have stood anywhere from a hundred to, in even some cases, over two hundred years. During the duration the bamboo are daily exposed to smoke rising from the indoor cooking furnace and heating fireplace that are intentionally vented through the roof serving a dual purpose to fumigate the straws as well. |

MASAHIKO GOTO |
Ever since I seriously started playing the saxophone almost 20 years ago, I have been equally preoccupied with customizing and balancing work. After a long trial and error period involving modifications and production
work utilising various types of synthetic material, the more I came to
appreciate the versatile qualities of cane as used in making reeds, and
thus began my endeavor to produce a mouthpiece from a bamboo stalk.
The concept was not unexpected and even natural to contemplate given the long historic influence of Japanese bamboo wind instruments. The various species of bamboo readily available also made it encouraging but determining the precise extent to which the bamboo had to be cured was not so easy. The final breakthrough came at the advice of an acquaintance who suggested that I try using susutake.
|
|
It was from such a susutake that had been cut at just the right section near the node where the densely packed fibre provides maximum resonation, that I succeeded in producing the first prototype as I had originally envisioned. The result was astounding; powerful, brilliant, expansive, and sense of balance between metal and rubber, and with the combination of cane reed matching giving a double-reed like effect. Flexible with impressive resonate sound throughout.
| With susutake obviously being extremely rare and expensive it was necessary to find a bamboo substitute possessing equally matured grade qualities for the production of reasonably priced standard model mouthpieces. Fortunately, through relentless research and with the help of experts a kiln-dry method was perfected to achieve the right prerequisites. |

Countless prototypes later I now proudly present to you the GOTTSU
bamboo mouthpiece superbly handcrafted and meticulously finished to exacting
standards with a final resin coating for longevity.
|
|
The current series are accented with a bamboo knot to the shank. Resin
coated by a process involving 3 days of drying, fine sanding and then polished
to bring out the bamboo patterns to a lustrous work-of-art finish. Kiln-dried
to stable maturity the bamboo is least affected by humidity and ambient
temperature. It is also extremely light, weighing only about 1/5 of a metal
piece, 1/2 that of rubber, i.e. Gottsu Alto mouthpiece only weighs roughly
10 grams. The new dimensions make it possible to choose from a wide range
of conventional ligatures. Broader reed matching made possible. Each mouthpiece
thoroughly play tested in adherence to exacting standards..
